Some of you know that I have struggled over the years with Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome {PCOS}. The testing and surgeries necessary to achieve a diagnosis for me was a bit of a long and grueling process. I am very fortunate that my doctors use minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopy, so I ended up with teeny tiny scars and next to no recovery time as a result. But not all women know what to expect or where to turn when they begin experiencing gynecologic issues.
This is a huge deal for women. Moms can be particularly vulnerable to the symptoms for extended periods of time simply because we have such a tendency to make sure that everyone else in our family is cared for before we will care for ourselves. I know first hand that so many of these problems truly are painful and what’s worse, it’s worrisome not to know what’s wrong!
Mom Central recently contacted me to let me know about a site that gives women great information on a variety of Women’s health issues and the minimally invasive procedures they can undergo to be diagnosed or treated. AAGL offers patient education topics and information on conditions and treatments as well (be sure to click on the Patient Education Topics link).
The best part though … they even offer a physician finder so that you can find a physician close to you that you know will use techniques to make your experience less challenging.
Any issue that you may be experiencing should be discussed with an obgyn! Did you know that most moms experience problems like heavy bleeding as well as a number of other common pelvic health conditions – fibroids, stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. In fact, they are so common that one-third of women will experience one or more of these conditions in their lifetime due to a variety of factors – most commonly pregnancy and childbirth.
I honestly promise you that more invasive surgeries are NOT necessary and they are not pleasant. I have had possibly more than my fair share of surgeries over the years and I cannot tell you how thankful I am for laparoscopy. So, I hope that if you are experiencing any problems at all, this little reminder will prompt you to take a second look at it and maybe get it checked out!
