A Servant's Heart

“The children of your servants will live in your presence; their descendants will be established before you.” ~ Psalm 102:28 (NIV)

It’s been going on for a while now and I have been watching it day after day.  I have a child who is a servant.  It suddenly dawned on me like a neon light today ~ my Little Monkey likes to serve.

It’s an interesting discovery to one day suddenly realize this fact about a child, but more so in this case because Monkey is only 2.  It’s in all the little things he does each day.  He loves to run up to the gate first thing in the morning and collect both of their milk cups.  If I try to only give him his milk he’ll sweetly ask “where’s baby’s?” (yes he calls Baby Bug “Baby” or “Honey”, but really never calls him by name).  He then takes both cups and quickly runs across the room to wherever Bug is playing and delivers the milk “here Baby, yow miwk”.  Just a side note in case you’re wondering . . . no the favor is NOT returned.

Isn’t it amazing how this is simply a natural “gift” for some people???  I usually have no problem with giving, serving and otherwise working to meet the needs of those around me, but I have often found my attitude gets in the way.  Causing me to question the civility (or lack thereof) in my having to “serve” everyone around here all the time. Note the attitude that kicks in there. This is an area I am working on right now.  I’m easily overwhelmed by the mountains I have to move each day to care for my “little” family.

Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that God sees all of that:

“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (NIV)

Ephesians 22-24 gently reminds us of all we are given to help us keep our attitude in check!

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (NIV)

So today I am learning that if I let it all go and just lean on Him for my daily life things really are so much simpler and the “Servant’s heart” just naturally stays where it should, in-tact and no attitude!

How are you doing today?  Got a little attitude you need to give to Him???

I love this post Shera. How sweet Monkey is. It is so interesting that some of us are just born with this nuturing side. I love the verses it made me sit and think about my “attitude” for serving others!
