Another school year has come to an end, yet for the past 3 months I have been busy researching and preparing for next year when we will be bringing our 13 year old home to be educated.

As I have been gathering resources for homeschooling families, one of my favorites is definitely The Old Schoolhouse Magazine!  I know that we aren’t the typical homeschool family, since we do still send some of our children to public school, but having the right resources in place for any child you homeschool is absolutely necessary whether you feel you fit the mold or not.

Just because you are “only” homeschooling one child doesn’t mean that you don’t need the same support, encouragement and resources as the family that is homeschooling 4 children.  This year I will be homeschooling 2 preschoolers and an 8th grader so it ought to be interesting.

I mentioned The Old Schoolhouse earlier and I just have to say that they have an amazing fan page on Facebook offering tons of contests, freebies and encouragement.  If anyone has a question about curriculum, they can ask it there and I’ve always been amazed by everyone’s willingness to rally around and answer each concern and question!  A definite must if you are a homeschooling family or are thinking about homeschooling!

I also subscribe to their magazine (digitally and in print) and just received the Spring edition and it is amazing.  Tons of resources, balanced advice, great encouragement and amazing ideas to educate your child well.   This is another resouce I highly encourage homeschooling families to have.

Right now is definitely THE time to subscribe because they are having an amazing promotion where you will receive 19 free gifts with any new or renewing 2 year subscription with them.  These free gifts are worth over $400.  If you have ever considered (or are now considering) getting a subscription to The Old Schoolhouse, do it now and do it soon because this offer is only for the first 5,000 people!

Shera you have my complete and total admiration for taking on such a job – whether it’s one, three, or all six of your boys that is still quite an undertaking, and while I admire you I do NOT envy you! :D

I would be interested in reading about why you decided to take this on, and how it’s been going, and I bet many of your other readers would be interested in hearing about it too.

    Hi Trisha,

It was NOT an easy decision by a long shot and was definitely a last resort. You can read the full post describing our decision HERE.

For those who want the seriously shortened version, it goes a bit like this…CJ (age 13) hasn’t really been being educated since the 3rd grade due to the existence of a working memory and processing problem he has. I figure if the schools haven’t been able to get it together by now (after 5 years) then it’s time we step in!

    Hi Shera
I read your post about why you have decided to homeschool. And I wanted to tell you that making the decision is the hard part. Now comes the wonderfully rewarding part!
I know that homeschooling has it’s moments, but for me the benefits have been tremendous. I wish you well in your journey, and hope CJ and you both have a fun and exiting year.

I think it’s so great for CJ that you are homeschooling him! Are you going to homeschool the twins too?

Thank you for the encouragement Julie! I am hoping for far more great moments than trials for sure :) .

Hey Gretchen! Thanks for the support! Yes, we’ll be home Pre-schooling the twins this year! Salesman will be in 5th grade, Tater in 4th grade and Lion will be in 1/2 day (probably afternoon) Kindergarten!

I think the hardest part is getting the schedule figured out and keeping it from feeling chaotic!

Homeschooling is awesome. I homeschool my six boys (we started with a public school crisis as well) and now we wouldn’t go back for anything! Good luck and remember you’ll want to quit at least twice each year, but hang in there.

We’ve home-schooled intermittently over the past 15 years. My oldest son Saturday married a beautiful young women who was homeschooled all the way through. My freshman college comp students who are homeschooled are always a joy! Go girl! It’s hard work when you’re called to do it in the best of times, but what a blessing in the long run!
