RLP_2985Who hasn’t grown up with Elmer’s Glue? Those little white school glue bottles are totally a trademark of all things back to school. Sure, their label may have changed (but only slightly) over the years, but it’s still the must-have and go-to product for back to school.

Seriously moms, tell me it’s something you don’t just automatically grab off the shelf when you’re purchasing school supplies.  You don’t have to look at the list, you know it’s there.  Though more recently I have had a few years where I was required to send fifty zillion glue sticks to school instead of just the traditional white glue (and you think I’m joking).

Elmer’s Glue Crew has introduced a wonderful classroom recycling program.  I love this because it’s making school supplies even more reuseable than they already are (can I hear it from all the moms who have been known to even do crayon melting inventions with all the crayon bits..).  Here’s the details…

The Elmer’s Glue Crew Recycling Program, launched in 2008, encourages classrooms nationwide to actively learn about recycling by collecting empty glue bottles and glue sticks to be recycled. Starting on Earth Day through the end of the school year, teachers and parent volunteers simply take their boxes of “empties” to the nearest Walmart store and drop them off with the people greeter. From there, Walmart ensures the empty products are handled by facilities designed to recycle these specific types of plastics.

RLP_3689Whether you’re a big fan of Walmart or not (those who know me know my answer to that), all it takes is one bin in your classroom to collect the items and one person from that class who is willing to take them to the nearest store and hand them to a greeter!

If you love shopping with Upromise (great program, be sure to check it out), Elmer’s glue is now part of that program as well, so be sure to stop by their site to get all the details on everything mentioned here…and more!

Elmer’s Glue Crew Recycling Program is offering a fun back to school pack for one lucky reader.  This pack includes one of each of the following products: 8 oz. Washable School Glue, 8 oz. Elmer’s Glue-All®, Washable School Glue Stick, Extra Strength Gel School Glue Jumbo Stick, Washable School Glue Stick, All-Purpose Glue Stick, Washable School Glue, Washable School Glue Gel, 3D Jumbo Glitter Paint Pen, No Wrinkle Glue Pen.  Whew!

Yes, I’m sort of on a School supply kick yesterday and today, but just wait there’s still so much more to come.  Today’s post obviously is going up quite late, so be looking for tomorrow’s Ready for School Feature (a discount next time) to go up a little after noon.

My favorite back to school memory is a money-saving one! As a teacher I would carefully refill the children’s small Elmer’s Glue bottles from a large gallon size Elmer’s Glue bottle. I would actually keep the smaller empty bottles from year to year, refilling them as needed. I was glad to see that even the Elmer’s Glue gallon size bottles can be recycled in their ingenious new program! Hurray for the Elmer’s Glue Crew!

Well I have a favorite memory from my youngest boy that just happened last week. He came home from school with scissor cuts with his shirt and his jeans. When I asked him if he was practicing cutting today he said no.I said well were you trying to cut your clothes . No he said in that cute little voice . Well how did you get cuts in your clothes. He replies I dunno!Did you cut your clothes? uh no!! I said strongly Noah! He shrugged his shoulders and lowered his eyes and said very slowly yesss! I said now you know you do not cut clothes you need to cut the paper. So I let him know I was emailing the teacher and he empatically shared and repeated NO NO. I sent the email and the teacher talked with him the next day. He said my teacher talked to me about cutting and I wont do it again he said brightly.

Never learned how to spell Hotel for a long time. When we had a spelling test with that word, The University Hotel was across the street and I looked out the window and wrote it down.

My favorite back to school memory is when my son started fifth grade. My mother worked in the cafeteria and he was so excited that he was going to see her. He came home and told me his friends thought it was REALLY COOL that she worked there as the baker–and he could get some extra food for them of course! Thank you for the contest!

My favorite back to school memory (in hindsight!) is that when I was in kindergarten after coming back from thanksgiving break for yearly school photos I had broken my nose and had two lovely black eyes. So there I was in my flowered dress with white blond hair in curly pigtails with my butterfly strips on my nose and two purple black eyes. Everyone thought my mom would get makeup photos but she loved them. She wanted me depicted as I really was. Looking back now it makes me smile and it will be something to show my children.

I always remember getting my picture taken on the front walk in my new dress and shoes on the first day of school. My favorite glue memory is squirting it on my hands, letting it dry and peeling it off like a layer of skin…weird, I know.

I have two favorites. In grade school I loved going shopping for school supplies. I loved crayons and glue and scissors and rulers and notebooks and all that good stuff. In college I loved shopping for clothes. I remember my first semester my daddy gave me his credit card and I put $400 on it. He didn’t give it to me again. That was a lot of money back then.

;-) Not back to school, near the end of the school year actually, but it does involve Elmer’s glue. One summer day my daughter came home from school and I noticed she went right away and changed into her play clothes. Unusual because she always liked to “dress up” for school and wanted to stay in her nice clothes till bed. Didn’t think anymore about it until I got the clothes out of the hamper that evening. Her favorite robin’s egg blue muslin dress had a stiff back and the bow was rigid too and “sticky”. Well upon investigating this anomaly I found it was papermache day in Mrs. Comer’s 4th grade class. I still roll in the floor laughing about this. My grown daughter would just as soon I forget it.

I loved the back to school shopping lists. It was always like a treasure hunt trying to get to the store before it was all picked over. And then figuring out what different supplies meant you were going to be learning that year in that class. Especially as I got older and the science class lists!

My favorite memory is of sending my kids off to school with little notes in their bags. It always made me feel good to tuck a little note into their lunch bags so they would have something to open later on in the day. That was of course before they got older and were way too cool for mom.

Each summer i swore my room would be more organized and clean than the previous year so i would buy all sorts of things to keep me organized. Although my room usualy looked like a tornado went through it a few months into the semester, I always had some pretty cool stuff!

I just started going back to school to work on a PhD…the other day I was having coffee with some of my new classmates and somehow the topic of glue came up. We all reminisced about the days back in elementary school when we would paint our hands with Elmer’s and then try to peel the entire patch off in one go. I never knew this was something kids at other schools did (never mind across the country), but apparently it was!
