McAfee Family Protection

When you’re looking to protect your children from the lurking “evils” online, there are definitely a few programs available to you, but few are from names as well known as McAfee.  Since they have been offering top notch virus protection for many years, offering many other types of protection is just a natural thing for them I think.

Keeping track of exactly what our children have been up to when we have to step away from the computer, and knowing that the websites known to be bad are blocked is one of the biggest benefits of this software for me.

Some of the key features of this software are:

  • Social network and email blocks to prevent strangers from contacting your kids.
  • YouTube filteringInstant Message and social network monitoring to let you know if your child posts inappropriate or personal information.
  • Text message and email alerts if your kid tries to visit a bad site.

Setting up the software for the first time takes a little time, but you get to really pick and choose what is available to each user and you can add several users to your account.  So if you have different age groups in your home and each needs a different access level, you’re covered!

Want a discount?  My readers have an opportunity to get a discount (be sure to take advantage of this by August 31, 2009 though) of $5 off McAfee Family Protection, just use the code: 5familyprotection.

Want to ask an expert?  You’re in luck, just visit this page to ask questions of Tracey Mooney, McAfee’s Chief Cyber Security Mom.   Remember though, McAfee Family Protection is not a replacement for your anti-virus software, you’ll need to leave that installed on your computer as well.

The only problem I had is that I could not access a couple of sites that I know to be safe, primarily a google group site for a review group I’m part of.  I had to disable the program in order to finally get in.  So you’ll definitely want to learn your way around those features.

Disclosure: This review is brought to you as part of a Mom Central blog campaign.  I was given access to the Family Protection Software and sent a McAfee blanket as a thank you for writing this review.
