Life Journal

I often mention journaling which has turned into and inspired most of my devotional writing!  It is something I encourage moms to do each day. One or two short pages in a journal just for their thoughts, needs, prayers and more.

There are times that I believe it is a great idea for moms to keep a separate spiritual journal to track their journey through the Word and inevitably spiritual growth. As you progress through the Bible and write your thoughts about each day’s reading you will truly grow and that growth is oh-so-very visible when you look back later.

This truly is a simple process and hopefully I’ll even be able to post an annual Bible reading plan soon. This has made my journey incredible, so as soon as I find it I’ll create a page for each month’s reading and update the blog.

The Life Journal Process: Select the scripture passages you’d like to read. You can make it as random as reading one chapter from wherever you open the Bible to a set reading plan like I mentioned above. Once you select the Scripture you intend to read, STOP … take a moment to pray over the scriptures. Ask God to point out one particular verse or theme to you as you read so that you can apply it to your life. It is truly amazing how He actually does this each time if I’m truly listening.

Once you’re done reading, grab your journal and get ready to write. I understand that you won’t feel like or have time to write every single day, but it only takes a few minutes and can make the application stick. The basic principle of this type of journal is to apply S.O.A.P. (Scripture.Observation.Application.Prayer), when you follow this basic process it keeps you organized and helps you to get down to business quickly so you can write your thoughts and move on with your day.

Begin by writing down the Scripture that stood out to you as you read. Once you’ve done that, write a few thoughts about it (Observation) what it means to you, why it stood out, what it is saying. From there, move on to Application … how can you apply this verse and it’s meaning to your life in a real and personal way? Then finish off by writing the Prayer that’s on your heart to apply all of it to your life.

That’s it! Once you’re done, go back up to the top of the page, make sure you write the date of the journal (don’t forget the year) and give it a relevant Title. I do recommend keeping a paper journal even if you’re a blogger! That doesn’t mean that you can’t put it on your blog, but there’s something unique and important about the process of writing it all down with pen and ink.
