I met my new OB today. Very personable but gave plenty of medical information right up front. Ended up that she answered most of my questions without me even telling her I had any – let alone asking them! She started the visit by basically saying, “OK, so here’s some info. about twins . . . “:
- She delivers vag as long as the first twin is head down.
- Delivering the second twin is always tricky (both c-section or vaginal delivery)
- She always has another OB deliver with her for twins.
- She isn’t trained to deliver a “breech extraction” but many of her colleagues are and I’m a good candidate for this to work (if the 2nd twin is breech) because my previous babies were so big. But all of that is decided as we go.
- Expect monthly ultrasounds for the rest of my pregnancy.
- OB visit frequency will be dictated by how the pregnancy is progressing.
- “Term” is definitely 38 weeks – not 40 – so if I don’t have them on my own by then she will induce.
- She does NOT have a protocol for bedrest at a certain stage in Twin Pregnancy just play it by ear depending on how things are going.
- Wanted to make sure I understand that although it helps that I’ve had ALL full-term and non-complicated pregnancies I am still high risk for pre-term problems such as pre-term labor and high blood pressure and have a higher chance of ending up on bedrest.
I have an ultrasound on Monday (9-12) at 12:45pm – incidentally that is the latest appointment you can get for a twin ultrasound.
I also found out that a certain blood screening test (alpha protein?) that I never do anyway does not have accurate results in a twin pregnancy so the OB’s discourage having it done in this case.
I have my next OB appointment at 17 1/2 weeks (10-6 @ 4.20pm) and another ultrasound (the anatomical one) Friday 10-14-2006 @ 12:45pm (19 weeks)
