It is as if a light bulb has suddenly illuminated in my brain . . . my sons are getting older! Not always interested in just anything that we are invited to do. I think I really did know this somewhere deep down inside, but I chose to live in denial . . . until this weekend.
I shared on Friday about some fun events we had planned for that evening. Although my sons had been looking forward to seeing High School Musical 2, I knew that they would not want to participate in the talent show and I was fine with that. I took only the oldest 4 and it had been a rough week, so it was a little bittersweet to leave my hubby and the babies at home since we had been able to spend so little time together as a family that week.
The event was great, my boys didn’t really participate in the talent show (not directly anyway), but all of the little kids had a blast singing, dancing and performing magic tricks. About halfway through the movie my niece ended up getting violently ill and soon after that all of the guests began making their way home even though the movie wasn’t over. I knew that my boys would have plenty of other opportunities throughout the weekend to see the movie, so I honestly didn’t care, and since my sis lives about half an hour away from us I kind of liked the idea of getting home a little earlier than I had expected.
Later the next day I simply realized that not everything we’re invited to is going to be appropriate for all of the boys anymore. Son1 really would have been better off hanging out at home with Dad and the babies, eating popcorn and watching the movie. Otter Boy is kind of in an in between phase and could have gone either way. The event was really best suited to The Beaver and Sir Lion!
I’ve always just kind of put the oldest three in the same category, but that isn’t going to work anymore! I guess I knew that day was coming, but I don’t think I had realized that the day had actually arrived (or even passed depending on how you look at it). So from now on I anticipate looking a little more closely at each event that we are asked to attend to decide exactly who should attend. So on we go to the next phase in life!
